Silgranit Sink

WHAT IS SILGRANIT MADE OF ?

Our granite sinks consist of Silgranit, a composite material made of up to 80 % quartz sand, the strongest component of granite. This is apparent not only to the eye, but also to the touch. Our Silgranit sinks have a lovely stone-like feel and are extremely easy to clean. What’s more, the material is highly resistant. You want to have free rein in your kitchen, whether you're cooking with tomatoes, strawberries, lemon juice or beetroot. Your sink is impervious to whatever ends up in it, and simply will not allow any discolouration. Only if limescale builds up on the surface of your sink you’ll need to remove it to avoid dirt accumulation. This makes your Silgranit sink an optimal synthesis of functionality and visual appeal

IS SILGRANIT HEAT-RESISTANT?

Sometimes, things can really heat up in your kitchen. Silgranit can deal with the usual temperatures reached on pots, pans and baking trays when preparing food. Pots filled with boiling water, baking trays coming directly out of the oven and the like can be placed directly on the sink. Silgranit material is heat-resistant according to DIN standard 13310. The DIN standard is a uniform type of testing especially designed to check whether a product can withstand the usual chores in and around a kitchen sink.

Tip: If you have an overheated pan or tray, we recommend using our top-rails or a heat pad or trivet to protect the surface of your sink and worktop from the effects of extreme heat and differences in temperature.

HOW RESISTANT IS SILGRANIT ?

Silgranit consists of 80 % quartz sand, the strongest component of granite. In short: your sink is extremely resistant. As such, you won’t need to worry about putting pots, pans and plates down wherever you fancy in your sink. You can also splash red wine, orange juice, hot coffee or beetroot juice around with abandon. Your Silgranit sink won’t mind one bit.

IS SILGRANIT ACID-RESISTANT?

Yes, Silgranit is resistant to food acids. Acid-based foods like lemons and oranges can be directly prepared on the sink surface. Even vinegar or acid-based cleaning products will not harm the sink surface (i.e. citric acid, acetic acid). Remember: chloride acids or any other industrial aggressive acids might hurt your Silgranit sink and many other kitchen surface like granite, wood, paint, glass, … so please avoid using them in the kitchen.

DOES SILGRANIT PRESENT ANY RISK IF IT COMES INTO CONTACT WITH FOOD?

No, Silgranit has been developed to come into contact with food and food acids. Hence there is no risk. Food acids won’t harm the sink material. Silgranit has a closed surface that blocks all common household acids. The material remains as it is. Nothing gets in and nothing comes out. And a Silgranit sink is safe for food, so no sink substances are transferred to food placed on the sink. The food won’t take on any other odour or flavor and can therefore be prepared on the sink safely.

IS SILGRANIT HYGIENIC?

Yes, Silgranit comes with the built-in patented protective formula Hygiene+Plus with antibacterial properties.

WHAT IS HYGIENE+PLUS?

SILGRANIT is made with a patented protective formula that makes its surface non-porous and thus water-repellent, dirt-repellent and easy to clean. As a result, Silgranit surface has a shield effect against bacterial growth. This is the Hygiene+Plus protection. The hygienic test* of the material Silgranit has shown that the material inhibits the formation of microbial biofilms and the growth of microorganisms on the material over time.

*Tests carried out by DHZ (German Hygiene Certificate GmbH) on behalf of and financed by BLANCO GmbH + Co KG with Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus in April 2022. More details on the tests are available here ( PDF in english / PDF in german ).

DO I NEED TO TAKE SPECIAL CARE OF A SILGRANIT SINK IF I USE A HOT MIXER TAP WITH BOILING WATER?

Silgranit is ready to work with a hot mixer tap. Silgranit isn’t fazed by high temperatures, so boiling water won’t be a problem.

Here our experienced tips:

  • Always place a pot or cup below the tap before activating the boiling water and turn it off in good time to avoid spills.
  • Be sure to keep your hands away from the running boiling water.
  • Remember that the spout might be very hot after running boiling water, so avoid touching it or run some cold water before touching it. This might be very important if you have kids at home.
  • Move the spout of the tap to different positions to ensure that the boiling water doesn’t hit always the same spot on the sink or place a cloth on the bottom to avoid subjecting one point of the sink surface to too much boiling water.
HOW FRAGILE ARE GRANITE SINKS?

Silgranite sinks are very durable. Stains do not enter through the closed surface. Sunlight does not affect a granite sink made of silgranite - the colors shine even after years.

IS THE MATERIAL HEAT RESISTANT?

Granite sinks can cope with the usual temperatures reached during the preparation of food in pots, pans and with baking trays. Even filled cooking pots or baking trays coming directly from the oven can be placed directly on the sink. This is proven by the tests according to DIN standard 13310. The DIN standard is a uniform type of test, which is intended in particular to check whether a product can withstand the usual tasks in and around a sink. Tip: We still recommend placing an overheated pan or baking tray on our TOP rails or a trivet to keep tension caused by extreme heat away from the countertop and sink.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY SILGRANIT GRANITE SINK?

For daily care, rub the sink dry with a microfiber cloth after each use. This will reduce the attack surface for lime deposits.

HOW DO YOU CLEAN SILGRANIT SURFACES?

Cutting up beetroot, chopping onions or peeling apples: things sometimes go astray when you\'re performing kitchen tasks. But your Silgranit sink is perfectly able to cope. Its secret is its fine-pored, unbroken surface, which practically prevents dirt from sticking at all and ensures that water simply rolls away. This protects the sink from limescale deposits and contamination. However, if the odd stain does appear at any point, simply reach for a scouring pad and a little washing-up liquid and water. You’ll have your Silgranit sink clean again in one wipe. In case of stubborn soiling, it’s best to use a professional cleaning agent, such as our BLANCO AKTIV powder.

CAN SILGRANIT GRANITE SINKS CHANGE COLOUR OVER TIME?

Fresh fruit, vegetables and years of bright sunshine provide the surfaces of your sink with plenty of challenges as time goes on. But they remain completely indifferent. After all, our Silgranit sinks are solid as a rock. The material will not discolour or fade under normal use, and with a little care.

WHAT CAUSES DARK MARKS ON SILGRANIT GRANITE SINKS?

Our Silgranit sinks can normally withstand hot pans at up to 140 degrees and very hard water. However, if you were to slide a pot across the drainer, for instance, it could cause abrasion. This is because Silgranit has a fine-pored surface that is harder than metal, thus leading to dark marks on light sinks. However, this is no cause for concern. You can simply clean your sink with a sponge and a little washing-up liquid and hot water. Once again, it will be the kitchen gem that you know and love.

HOW DO I REMOVE METAL ABRASION (e.g from pots) ON THE SILGRANIT SINK?

Especially on light-colored sinks metal abrasion from pots are quickly noticed. However, these can be easily removed with a soft sponge, water and cooking oil. Moisten the sponge with water, apply the oil and remove metal traces with circular movements. You can find more cleaning and care tips in our guide.

HOW CAN I REMOVE ETALIC TRACES (e.g from pots) FROM MY SILGRANIT SINK?

Robust and colour-fast: these qualities define your Silgranit sink. This makes any little dark streaks that appear on your surfaces all the more striking. These are most likely to have been caused by pots. But there’s no need to panic: you can remove such signs of abrasion in one step: After all, not only is your sink robust, but it is also extremely easy to clean. Just use the rough side of your sponge, moisten it with a little hot water, and wipe it over the dirty area. Voilà! Your sink will be its shining self once again.

CAN DISCOLOURATION OR MARKS APPEAR ON SILGRANIT?

Day-to-day use of your Silgranit sink may result in the odd mark appearing. If limescale deposits have formed on your sink, for instance, these can easily absorb spilled coffee, tea or red wine. You may see notice slight discolouration as a result. However, if you look after your sink regularly, this won’t be a problem. You won’t need to embark on a deep clean to put it right. After all, as materials go, Silgranit PuraDur is extremely easy to clean. A little bit of TLC with a scouring pad and some washing-up liquid is all your sink needs for marks to disappear in a few simple steps. Then it only remains to rinse it down with water and rub it dry, and your sink will be sparkling clean once again.

HOW CAN I REMOVE LIMESCALE FROM MY SILGRANIT SINK?

Limescale can be a persistent problem, depending on where you live and the state of your water pipes. Unsightly water marks can appear all of a sudden and detract from the beauty of the pride of your kitchen. It’s just as well this that cleaning your Silgranit sink is no big deal. To put it right, you need a professional descaling agent, a commercially available heavy-duty detergent or vinegar concentrate, along with hot water no cooler than 60 °C. Apply the solution to the marks and leave it to steep for at least 2 hours (or simply overnight). Then wash the sink down thoroughly, clean it with a sponge and finally rub it dry.

WHAT IS THE EASIEST WAY OF REMOVING STAINS FROM DARK SINKS?

Milky patches can soon show up on your stylish dark sink. These are caused by limescale deposits, which can vary hugely from place to place, and depending on the state of your water pipes. Such stains also pick up deposits from substances like tea or coffee, and are thus responsible for discolouration. But all this isn’t as bad as it sounds. Luckily, BLANCO ANTIKALK, a little vinegar-based cleaner or diluted citric acid and hot water can come to your rescue. The limescale will dissolve if you clean your kitchen sink thoroughly with these substances. If you don’t want to constantly have to contend with unsightly marks, be sure to dry your sink off with a microfibre cloth after every use. Doing this will prevent the limescale from occurring in the first place.

HOW CAN I CLEAN MY BASKET STRAINER ?

The basket strainer in the secret hero in your sink. After all, it prevents your sink from getting clogged up, thus ensuring perfect functionality. Over time, however, the basket strainer will collect some dirt, so you should give it a clean every now and then. You don’t even have to buy a special cleaner for that purpose. Here’s our trick: put a level teaspoon of powdered dishwashing detergent onto the closed basket strainer. Pour approx. 250 ml boiling water over it and leave the solution to work. Now brush and scrub it (e.g. with a dishwashing brush) until the basket strainer and drain cup are shining once again. Finally, open up the basket strainer and take out the basket insert. Now you have room to clean the hole opening in the drain cup. Once this is squeaky clean too, reinsert the basket insert and rinse it with clean water.

Oops! Get distracted for a second while washing up, and a dish or pot can tumble into the bowl. We all know what it's like. There's no call to be alarmed - your granite sink made of Silgranit can take it. It is resistant.

The special thing is that Silgranit isn't a coating. The material goes all the way through. That makes your granite bowl as enduringly beautiful as it was on the day you got it. As we know that everyday tasks really put your kitchen sink through its paces. It's great to have a sink that is also a tough performer.

Hygienic: reassuringly safe

A kitchen sink has to put up with a lot over the course of the day. In the morning, leftover milk is poured into the sink. At lunchtime, some chicken may accidentally slip into the bowl after being washed. In the evening, vegetables may be chopped on the drainer. Nothing to worry about? Absolutely. Granite sinks made of Silgranit come with the patented 'Hygiene+Plus' protection formula. This means that the material has anti-bacterial properties and a dirt-repellent effect. Tests confirm that the unique built-in hygiene protection reduces bacterial growth by an average of 98%. This ensures safety in every eventuality and facilitates thorough cleaning.

As such, your child can set their lolly down on the sink at any time, and then carry on licking it a while later.

Food-safe: preserving taste

You can rest assured that a peach, fresh mushrooms or sliced apple will taste exactly as they should. Even if you've left them lying on or in your sink for hours. The magic phrase is 'food-safe'. Your fruit and vegetables won't take on any other odour or flavour. This is because your Silgranit sink doesn't give off any substances. Nothing. One hundred per cent. You can leave tomatoes and mushrooms lying on it with a clear conscience.

Acid-resistant: Access denied

Fruit acid is aggressive. Have you ever noticed how quickly limescale loosens if it comes into contact with citric acid? Or how quickly a piece of orange can slip from the chopping board into the bowl, or lemon juice can get on the ledges, when making a fruit salad? No need to worry! The fine-pored surface of the granite composite used for your sink is sealed. It blocks all common household acids. The material remains as it is. Nothing comes away. Nothing gets in.Regardless of whether your Silgranit granite sink is white, beige or grey, it will not take on the colours of drinks, food and the like.
