Gas rings hard to ignite

The ignitor is located under the burner cap. If the cap has become slightly displaced the ignitor may not spark. Check that all caps are properly located.
Ignition will be quicker if a pan is in place. Ignite with the gas at full; once lit, turn it down to around 50%, it should lock on within 6 seconds.

Ignition spark continues to operate

This can be caused by the ignition actuator sticking down due to grease or debris, the ignitor block within the body of the hob becoming short-circuited by a fault or more frequently by the ingress of water due to over enthusiastic cleaning of the hob or water boiling over onto the hob top and entering the appliance. If it has been caused by water ingress the problem will cure itself once the hob dries out, otherwise you will require a qualified engineer to dismantle the appliance and effect a repair. On no account attempt to dismantle a gas appliance unless you are suitably qualified.

Cleaning aluminium burner rings

Remember that hobs are cooks tools and as such will deteriorate with use. Cooking inherently involves the heating of foodstuffs, many of which have a fatty content, and when fat lands on a hot surface it will burn on very quickly. Even water will tend to burn on to the aluminium burner rings and leave a brown mark. The most effective way of cleaning these burners is to ensure the food residue is cleaned off as soon as possible after cooking, before the grease deposits are allowed to burn back on. These burners should be soaked in a solution of warm soapy water (overnight), extra stubborn stains may then be removed with the use of a cream cleaner such as Cif. These may be applied using a green nylon scourer or a stainless steel scourer such as the ones produced by Scotchbrite (the 3M company).

Cleaning cast iron pan supports

Frequently scrubbing the supports is very effective but you can also use Cif. Do make sure that the supports are thoroughly dried after cleaning to prevent rusting.

Faults during operation

Hotplate switches on and off during operation

Temperature is controlled by the heating element switching on and off.
For this reason the red heating element is not always visible. Selecting a lower heat setting causes the heating element to switch off more often; on higher heat settings less often. Even with the highest setting selected the heating element still switches on and off.

Humming noise

This is normal operating noise.
When the hotplates are heating up, a slight hum may be emitted. However, this is perfectly normal.

Hotplates are not all equally bright

This is a technical characteristic.
The light from the elements of the individual hotplates may not be of the same brightness. Depending on the angle of view, it may appear to go beyond the marked edge of the hotplate. However, this does not affect quality and function.

Damage to the hob

Scatches or scuffed surface

Rough saucepan and frying pan bases scratch the glass ceramics

Check your cookware. Follow the manufacturer's instructions when using special cookware.

Salt, sugar, sand, etc

Always keep the hob clean and dry. Do not use it as a work surface or for storage space. Particles of salt, etc, trapped between a cooking utensil and the ceramic hob surface will cause scratches.

Hard or pointed objects

Damage can occur if hard or pointed objects fall on the hob. Do not store such objects above the hob.

Unsuitable cleaning agents

Never use scouring sponges, abrasive materials or aggressive cleaners such as oven spray and stain remover. Only use cleaning products which are suitable for glass ceramics.
Care for your hob using a protective care product for ceramic glass.
Water marks on the ceramic hob can also be removed with lemon juice or vinegar.
Heavy dirt is best removed using a glass scraper.
Please see our Online Store for suitable products to clean ceramic hobs.

Stuck-on sugar and food with a high sugar content

Remove boiled over food remains (particularly stuck-on sugar and food with a high sugar content like jam) immediately with a glass scraper. Clean the surface when it is still warm to the touch using a cleaning agent and kitchen towel. If the cooking surface is not cleaned as soon as possible stains may result.

Shimmering metallic discolouration

Pan abrasion

Avoid using an empty pan on the hob, this can damage the pan base. Avoid copper, enamel and aluminium pans, thes can leave difficult to remove marks on the ceramic glass.
Never place hot saucepans and frying pans on the control panel.

Unsuitable cleaners

Discolouration may only be removed with great difficulty. Use only cleaning products which are suitable for glass ceramics.
Please see our Bosch Online Store for suitable products to clean ceramic hobs.

Surface Irregularities

This is a possible characteristic of glass ceramic hob tops

Because of the glassy finish of the hob, even the smallest bumps of less than 1 mm diameter are quite clearly noticeable. They do not impair the function or the durability of the ceramic glass hob top.

Damage to the hob surround

Unsuitable cleaning agents used

Only use warm, soapy water. Do not use any sharp or abrasive materials. The glass scraper is not suitable for this purpose. Lemon juice or vinegar are also unsuitable; they can create dull areas.

Hot cookware

Never place hot saucepans and frying pans on the surround, they may mark and scratch it and can cause discolouration.

Cleaning & Care

How do I clean an ceramic hob?

Make sure your hob is cold before you start cleaning. Pour a small amount of cleaning fluid on the hob and use the cleaning cloth or kitchen paper to clean. Burnt-on food deposits can be removed carefully by using the glass scraper. Use the scraper at a shallow angle with smooth strokes and avoid stabbing or chipping at the surface. This Maintenance Pack contains all the tools you need to clean an induction hob.
